Mo Tom earned his first stakes victory with a score in the Street Sense S. on opening day of the Churchill Downs fall meet Sunday, providing his freshman sire with another stakes win on the heels of Nyquist’s triumph in yesterday’s GI Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The dark bay rallied to capture a six-furlong maiden event at Ellis Park for trainer Tom Amoss Sept. 5 and was subsequently transferred to the care of Chris Richard. Recently a rallying third in a six-panel Keeneland allowance Oct. 8, the colt took solid public support to earn his second win in this first try at an extended distance. Mo Tom bided his time at the rear of the lead flight behind a half-mile in :46.06, angled five-wide turning for home and seized control in midstretch. He had sufficient gas left in the tank to hold safe a late bid from commonly owned Tom’s Ready (More Than Ready) by a comfortable margin. “We’ve thought very highly of this horse, he just needed a little bit of seasoning and needed more distance,” commented winning trainer Chris Richard. “It wasn’t really a surprise to see him go out and run as well as he did. So I give him a lot of credit, it’s more him than it is me, that’s for sure. We’ll discuss it with the owners but [the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 28] is a distinct possibility. The Uncle Mo babies are running all over the place and I don’t think you could ask for a better start for your freshman season. I think two turns is definitely within his capability. He’s got this big long cruising stride to him and I have always thought that the further hewould go, the better he would get.” Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
